Navigating turbulent waters: Crafting learning trajectories in a changing work context

How do newcomers gain access to learning opportunities when they are denied practice? Changes in the nature of work, such as labour outsourcing and technological advancements, have created challenges for learn. They may be more easily relegated low-level repetitive tasks, scutwork. In these situations, newcomers’ ambiguous position learners can limit participation practices needed progress their trajectories. Using field-study data, we explore situated merchant-navy cadets. We show that, not permitted participation, structural arrangements practice – temporal structures, spatial territories hierarchical hinder opportunities. show, further, that some leverage same surreptitiously resources which conceptualise stealth work. Consequently, unveil soft forms power at play crafting trajectories, making three contributions. First, how a leveraged enable learning. Second, gaining stealthily, requires both normative counter-normative performances. Third, importance trajectories unpack is navigated by newcomers.
